Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20–21).
Did you know that our God is a God of more—not less?
There is a story in 2 Chronicles 25 that demonstrates this principle. Amaziah became king of Judah, and according to the Bible, did what was right in the LORD’s eyes, but not wholeheartedly. He built up his military. He drafted three hundred thousand men, and then hired a hundred thousand more men from Israel for a hundred talents of silver. That would be worth $20,142,000 today.
But then a prophet came to Amaziah and told him that he should not go into battle because God would overthrow him if he did. Amaziah asked the man of God about all the money he spent for troops and the prophet replied, “The LORD can give you much more than that.”
Amaziah listened, and in an act of humility, released the troops for which he had paid millions. Later, when he did go into battle, he experienced great victory. The God of more gave him success without hired hands.
This principle has not expired. God still desires to give us more than we can imagine, yet we often do not believe it or dwell in a spirit of lack. We do not think we deserve God’s help, or we focus on what we do not have rather than what is possible. Jesus said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26, NIV).
God is the one who gives us our dreams, but He also wants us to understand that He is the provider for those dreams and the source of more. Like Jesus, he will multiply the metaphorical fishes and loaves in our lives. He just wants us to believe He can, and like Amaziah, take a leap of faith even if it means turning back from our own plan.
