Stay With Me

~ۓ

There’s a popular song out written by Mary J. Blige and Sam Smith called Stay With Me. It plays wherever I go, so I’ve begun to take notice.

Today, I looked up the lyrics, and while the song is about a romantic relationship, there are some words that can apply to our spiritual relationship with God.

“Oh, won’t you stay with me? ‘Cause you’re all I need.”

Can God send messages to us through secular music? I believe so, because it’s happened to me once before when the song, Have I Told You Lately played everywhere I went. It was during a stretch where I needed God to reassure me that he loved me, and it was my special song with him. It played when I needed it the most, and I still hear it at just the right time.

So what was God saying this time through repeated playing’s of this Sam Smith tune? In the grocery store, on the radio, at the pharmacy….

He’s saying “Stay with me.”

When others leave you, disappoint you, reject you,

“Stay with me.”

Today, I received a confirmation from a very wise friend, who after hearing my frustration with some people, she said, “Lisa, I used to be just like you. When someone didn’t return my e-mail, or a loved one didn’t speak to me, or someone disappointed me, I would get all upset, but then I finally got to the point where none of that mattered. I realized all I need is God.”

And he said, “Stay with me.  ‘Cause I’m all you need.”

Maybe that is your message today as well. Do you search for approval from others? Do you get hurt when someone doesn’t respond the way you want them to?

Is there an estrangement in your life?

God wants you to stay with him, and be fulfilled by your relationship with him. Other relationships often fall short. Our job is to simply love the people in our world, unconditionally.

Psalm 121 assures us our help comes from the LORD.

He will not let your foot slip—

He who watches over you will not slumber;

He will keep you from all harm–

He will watch over your life, your coming and going

Both now and forevermore.

Stay with him, because no one else can fill a role like that in your life.

If you are ready to let go of your expectations and place your disappointment on a backburner, it’s time to center your life around God, rather than around others.

He saying to all of us, “Stay with me because I’m all you need.”

It’s only in God that we can find the contentment and the security we long for. (LBW)
