The Accountability of Thanksgiving by Lisa Burkhardt Worley
It’s two days before Thanksgiving and the stiffness is setting in. Yesterday I cleaned out a refrigerator in the garage that died, and I am embarrassed to say how long it has been sitting there with perished food in it. I have grocery shopped for a crew of 9, cleaned out the pantry, and will work on decluttering the bedroom today. I could complain about the work, but I am grateful for the motivation and accountability that Thanksgiving brings. The house needed deep cleaning, and unfortunately, it took Thanksgiving to put everything else aside and work on my home.
When you are the host, it is easy to grumble about Thanksgiving preps. There is no doubt that it is a lot of toiling, but in the end, it is a blessing to have a house that is extra clean, and for this empty nester, it is fun to know that the house will be full again with children, grandchildren and godchildren for a few days.
There is always something to be thankful for—even cleaning.
Are you hosting the Thanksgiving dinner this year? What is your mindset? Crank up some praise music while you work. Ask God to give you joy and thankfulness during the labor—a labor of love for family. He will provide what you need as you prepare. Remember 2 Corinthians 9:8: “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
I pray you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that we will all thank God for using Thanksgiving to put our houses in order!
