Who Can We Trust? By Lisa Burkhardt Worley
With several church leaders falling and now with an international Christian television network having internal issues, we may want to choose a side or have an opinion about the scenarios. Although these situations are disappointing, we must remind ourselves that it is not up to us to judge. We are on the outside looking in and do not know what is in the hearts of those involved.
In Matthew 7, Jesus gives us sobering counsel about condemning people: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:1-3).
I have been wrongly judged before. What about you? It does not feel good and I have found it takes a long time to come back from unjust judgment, because there will always be people who choose to believe false accounts.
One might also ask, “Who can I trust?” You want to be able to trust church leaders; however, God has a clear word about that as well. In Psalm 118:8, it says, ”It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans.” And when we find ourselves down in the dumps about uncertainty and about human failure, there is supernatural joy and peace when we trust God. In his letter to the Romans, Paul encouraged his audience with these words: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
If we keep our focus on God, what people do or don’t do will not phase us. We’ll have hope and stability no matter what happens—a promise backed up by Scripture.
