What Fills Your Mind? by Lane Jordan Burday

So as he thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7).

We are bombarded with all types of stimuli—advertisements, commercials, movies, books, YouTube videos, Instagram, etc., to the point that it is tough to keep our minds and thoughts pure.

However, the soundest way to improve the quality of your life is first to improve the quality of your thinking. We protect our homes and our families. It’s just as critical to protect our minds.

How do we do that? By staying in God’s Word daily and refraining from seeing or exposing ourselves to anything that would harm our spirit. I know this is hard! There are many TV shows and mini-series that everyone is telling us we must watch. But will they be beneficial to our thoughts and our life with Christ? Will they benefit our children or grandchildren?

I’m in two book clubs, and fortunately, one of the books we chose was decided not to read because we found out the content wasn’t what we wanted in our minds and thoughts. I love this verse that helps us get rid of anything we see or hear that will harm us:

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

I’m afraid that far too many followers of Christ follow the culture instead of wisely guarding their hearts and feeding their minds. They may adopt a casual and impulsive approach to what they read, watch, and listen to on a regular basis. Again, it is easy to absorb our surroundings and gradually adopt the culture’s worldview.

Please know I’m not judging! I must fight this battle daily because I know what happens in my spirit and heart when I watch or read something that doesn’t align with what God would want me to see.

So, we need to ask ourselves:

What do you look at before falling asleep at night?

What are you looking at on social media?

How do the movies and TV shows you watch affect your attitudes toward faith, family, and work?

Are you consistently walking and talking to God?

Are you speaking and thinking words of life into your life?

I do know that excellence begets excellence. What we put into our minds and hearts will either make us better or worse. It’s the law of sowing and reaping. Only good thoughts can give rise to good thoughts.

I pray that you and I will continue to see the difference between what the world wants us to see and what God wants us to see and apply to our lives.
