Who’s Your Boss? By Lisa Burkhardt Worley

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5–6

I worked in secular television for twenty years as sportscaster before it was cool for women to be on sports television. It was a very rewarding career for this sports fan, but the television industry can also be difficult at times. One might get released from a contract even though his or her work is excellent. There is a hyper-concern about ratings and physical appearance.

When I retired from the media, I said I would never go back; however, God had a different plan, and I am now working for him in Christian television by producing and co-hosting our POP Talk programs.

It is such a blessing to devote our work to the LORD. Whether we are secular employment or Christian ministry, God should always be our boss. If he is, some of the daily workplace irritations will fade in the light of God’s glory. Colossians 3:23–24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

What if we give each workday to Jesus? We can ask him to go before us in our meetings and to guide us in the decisions we need to make during the day. Why don’t we pray for him to provide opportunities to share his truth with a co-worker? Three of my former co-workers have a relationship with the Lord now because of the opportunities he gave me to share the gospel with them. One is still my spiritual daughter.

Work does not have to be a grind. 2 Corinthians 5:20 says that we are Christ’s ambassadors and God is reaching others through us. This sheds an entirely new light on our jobs. They become a mission field where God the Father has planted us.

Have you changed your view on work?

Lord Jesus, I pray that I will see work as a place where I can bear your light. I ask for you to open doors for me to be a witness.
