His Burden is Light by Lisa Burkhardt Worley

oxenCome to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30

Our Pearls of Promise team has a heart for broken-hearted women and want to help women nation-wide.  We believe there are hurting people across the country who need to be freed from whatever holds them back from living a life full of joy and love, whether it be family dysfunction, abuse or childhood tragedies.

But the process has encountered many roadblocks. While we believe this is a call from God, the yoke has not always been easy and the burden has not always been light. Our original thought was that we were to speak at churches and to women’s groups. While we are doing that, the offers to speak have not come flooding in. It is by our own initiative that we are traveling to other states. Maybe we aren’t working hard enough?

A couple of months ago a prophet told us Pearls of Promise would be speaking to the nations but it “would not be what we thought it was going to be.” We have been working with Christ Healing Center in San Antonio to put on a women’s conference for them September 7th and their vision is to place healing centers in cities all over the country, which they are in the process of doing. Pearls of Promise is all about emotional healing, so why couldn’t we work with them to put on women’s conferences as the new healing centers are planted? As this idea is becoming reality before our eyes, I realized the prophet was right.  This was not what we imagined it was going to be.

Next week I will be in Houston to support a friend of mine going through a difficult time.  I haven’t been to Houston in years but I did have a vision of doing a women’s conference there because a healing center is currently being planted in The Woodlands, near Houston. I didn’t put two and two together until the day after I told my friend I’d be there for her. I am dense sometimes, so I think the Holy Spirit had a chuckle first, then tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, “Lisa you’re going to Houston. What else is in Houston?” That’s when I realized God was also placing me in Houston to meet with the organizers of the healing center there to plan a women’s conference!

It was at that point I thought of the verse from Matthew For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Putting together a conference in The Woodlands was HIS plan and in HIS timing and he placed me there to get the job done.

It was SO EASY.  There was no striving, no worrying, no convincing. This was a call of God and his yoke was light.

How many times do we receive a call of God but can’t understand why it’s so laborious to get it off the ground?  Maybe God has not yet shown us the exact path we are to go down.

The Apostle Paul had a call to serve God.  He thought he was doing it the right way but on the path to Damascus he found out different. Jesus said to Paul, It is hard for you to kick against the goads (NKJV) A goad was a stick with a pointed piece of iron fastened to the end of it. This instrument was used to prod the oxen on when they were plowing. When a stubborn ox attempted to kick back against the goads, he would actually wound himself.

Jesus was telling Paul his yoke was easy. By persecuting Christians, he was fighting his actual calling, to serve Christ, and was hurting himself in the process.

What result are you trying to force in your life? Where do you need to let go of the control and allow Jesus to lead? If we allow Christ to guide us, it’ll be easy.  He will provide, and the load won’t be so burdensome.

Think of a moving sidewalk at the airport. You are carrying heavy luggage as you navigate to your gate but when you step on the moving sidewalk, you can put your bags down and it takes you to your destination.

Jesus is your moving sidewalk. Step on! Allow him to make the journey less cumbersome.

  1. I love your imagery of Jesus being our “moving sidewalk”! He does indeed urge us forward even when we may not know what is ahead. My problem is that I tend to step off the sidewalk when things get uncomfortable or unexpected. Thanks for your encouraging story to stay on the sidewalk!

  2. Sharon, The thing I love about moving sidewalks in the airport is that there is always another one you can jump on if you decide to divert from the path!
