His Truth Marches On by Lisa Burkhardt Worley, D.Min.

I am one of those people who is honest to a fault. I think it’s because God desires that we be truthful, so I want to please Him by being an honest person. Proverbs 18:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” In Proverbs 6, lying is one of the six things the LORD hates.

What does this have to do with July 4th and the 250th anniversary of our nation?

It’s because this country was founded on truth. The Declaration of Independence, drafted in 1776, says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The Battle Hymn of the Republic, a song penned by Julia Ward Howe during the Civil War, states, “His truth is marching on.” This song was written by Howe, an abolitionist who called for an end to slavery. This resonates with me because a Jewish great-uncle of mine (whom I did not know), Julius Rosenwald, was a friend of Booker T. Washington and with Washington built close to 5,000 modern, improved schools for African Americans during segregation. While his work was admirable, slavery and segregation were still wrong, and that is truth from God’s Word.

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28).

God intended for us all to be free!

As we look at other nations around the world, we know many countries do not embrace the freedom we enjoy in this U.S. That is why we have to protect our freedom. We need to vote for politicians who believe in the rights laid out in the Declaration of Independence. We should confess our sins, ask God to have mercy on the United States, and pray for truth to march on in this country. God’s is sovereign, and He expects us to move forward proclaiming His truth and freedom.
