Jesus is Jewish by Lane Jordan Burday

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end. (Luke 1: 30-33)

For some people today, realizing that Jesus—the God of Christianity—is Jewish is hard for them to understand. Think of all the Christians through the years who have been antisemitic, saying that the Jews killed Jesus when in truth, the Roman gentiles did.

But Christianity was birthed from Judaism. As more and more Gentiles became believers in Jesus, the role of Judaism in the Christian faith became an issue. Judaizers, a group of Jewish teachers, taught that believers in Jesus must convert to Judaism and be circumcised to be saved (Galatians 5:2-6). Paul, who reached out to Gentiles, wrote the letter to the Galatians to counter and condemn this false gospel, reminding them that “a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ.”

Paul said, “No one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law (Galatians 2:16), because ‘the righteous will live by faith.’”

What freedom we have because of Jesus! He freed us from the law of God and man, and all that is required of us is to believe in Him by faith. Just that. Faith that God sent His Son to connect us with the Father.

This is how we become saved. Not by our good works but by pure faith: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10: 9-10).

As Easter week approaches, I hope you know the God who sent His Son to you and me. God has the power to overcome death, for He raised His Son to live forever with us! And God has the power to give you a life of freedom full of joy, peace, and love.
