The Miracle of Birth by Lane Jordan Burday
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41).
A young girl, around the age of 14 or 15, realized she was pregnant. She was alarmed, afraid, and unsure of what to do next.
Most people would tell her to go to an abortion clinic. How would she be able to bring up a child as young as she is? Her whole life is ahead of her, and it would be ‘wasted’ if she kept the child.
But in this particular case, it was Mary, the mother of Jesus. How blessed the whole world is that she obeyed God and kept this baby who became the Savior of the world?!
And for those who believe abortion is a right, the precious baby in the womb has a right to live. The verse above shows precisely that babies are alive and can hear and move!
God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth…to a virgin named Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled”
(Luke 1:28-32, 38)
Mary’s answer was highly humble in her day; if a young unmarried woman became pregnant, she would be outcast or stoned. Yet Mary humbly said yes to her Lord, understanding the extreme consequences.
Where are we today during this Christmas season? Are we rushing around doing our will, or are we prayerfully going through each day in humble thanksgiving that God sent His only Son to a sin-filled world to save us?
There is a verse that says that if we try to grasp all we can, we will lose it, but if we give all up to God, we will find our life: “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses them for Me will find it” (Matthew 16:25).Mary chose to lose her life for her God.
My prayer for us this Christmas Season is that we seek Christ in every moment and remember, “For in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
Christmas is our time to remember, celebrate, and hold more closely our beloved Savior. How can we live without Him?
