Is Anything Good? By Lane Jordan Burday
Is Anything Good? Many are asking, “Who can show us any good?” Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord. You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:6-8

This is a dark time in the history of the world. Many wars are happening right now all over the world. We have an election that appears to separate the entire nation. We have had horrendous hurricanes with great loss of life and livelihoods. People are worried about climate change and more disruptive weather. It appears that fewer people are attending church or have faith. Drugs are becoming a more significant threat to our society, as is domestic abuse. Many children don’t have enough to eat or a safe place to live.
Many ask, “Is there any good in the world today?”

That same question was asked a few thousand years ago by the Psalm writer, King David. He realized that the only truth we can count on is God, a truth that endures through all times and circumstances! When we turn our anxious hearts and thoughts toward the Lord, His light can then shine on us and fill us with indescribable joy! In fact, God’s joy is better than all the grain and all the wine we could have.

When God’s light shines on us, we receive supernatural power, love, and strength to help us combat anything that comes our way. In fact, we will have so much peace that we can lie down and sleep in peace. That is worth millions!
You may remember the verses in the book of Philippians 4:5-6, where Paul shares how great God’s joy and presence is:
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
I hope you remember this passage, where God asks us not to be anxious about anything. I know how hard that is! But when we stop worrying and pray to God, the peace and joy we receive are worth more than anyone could ever understand.

We will also get a glimpse of heaven: being in God’s presence and filled with joy, gladness, peace, and God’s light. When we turn to God and pray about our problems, we have communion and fellowship with our heavenly Father, preparing us for eternity with Him!
