Have you ever heard the phrase, “God helps those who help themselves? I’ve heard it numerous times over my lifetime, and guess what? It’s not in the Bible.
God did not design us to be self-sufficient and to travel through life without community. He created marriage so two people can share life. He invented friendship so we can support each other in both the good and the bad. And God Himself should always be our go-to when we feel helpless. He is our “refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
Even Jesus needed support when approaching the most difficult scenario of His life: His impending crucifixion. In Matthew 26:38, He told the disciples, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Jesus needed his friends.
When we are going through difficult times, God wants us to lean on Him. Psalm 34:17 promises: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”
We should never say, “I don’t need anyone” because it is not true. We need others. We need Jesus. When life presses us down, our precious Savior desires to carry our burdens.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28).
So don’t try to manage a crisis alone. The LORD is waiting for you to ask Him for His wise counsel, assistance, and healing. He has the answers we are looking for, and wants to help.
