The Media—Can We Believe it? By Lane Jordan Burday
The simple believes every word, but the prudent considers well his steps (Proverbs 14:15).

I went to college for a Journalism/Broadcasting/Public Relations degree. I was taught to write the truth, and the truth must be documented with more than one person’s verification.
I wrote and edited for newspapers, and I would never have thought to publish a biased or untrue article.
However, in today’s world, I believe the media is biased and, at times, very untruthful, to the point where I cannot believe every word I read or hear in the news. Which is so sad because we need to know what is really going on in our world today.
I am even to the point of saying that we can’t believe every word in history books. They may have the facts wrong, or, in some cases, they leave out important events entirely! I don’t believe every word I hear from scientists, for they are forever changing their minds. Remember when we were told to limit our egg consumption? Now that the founding is out the door.

And what’s even sadder is, I can’t believe every word I hear from a pulpit because there are many false teachers in our world today. Of course, Jesus warned us about that in 2 Peter 2:1-3:
“…there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord…In their greed, these teachers will exploit you…”
I do believe we are in the very last days before Jesus comes for His Bride, the Church, for this verse in 2 Timothy 4:3-4 is so true today!
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

This verse has come to pass today. There are many churches that do not follow God’s Word, the Bible, and turn their beliefs into what they want to believe. There are churches that believe homosexuality is accepted (though clearly God says it is an abomination), so that those who are in their church have their “itching ears” satisfied with what evil says rather than what God says.
So, what can we do? We need to believe every word in the Bible! It is God-breathed, and you can trust every jot and tittle, and so by it you can discern the true and false teacher. The Scriptures have no bias! They are always right, and they never change. The Bible is the Word of the living God, promising everlasting life to all who trust in His mercy, expressed in Jesus Christ. Believe this with all your heart, and you will live in such peace. One of my favorite verses helps us understand how pure the Word is from 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
In other words, when I need an answer to a life question, I should go to the Bible or to my pastor, who follows God’s Word. It will show me the truth where today’s media will not.

You may wonder how I know God’s Word is true. Because every time I read the Bible, it comes alive! God gives us this answer in Hebrews 4:12:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
I have also learned that thousands of prophecies have been fulfilled, especially those concerning the birth, life, and death of Jesus Christ. The probability of these coming true is staggering!
The good news? Scriptures have no bias, they never change, and God shows His great promises to us there.
